Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, Hawaiian ʻAwa Workshop – Saturday, May 4, 2024 & Sunday, May 5, 2024
Join Kaʻiana Runnels at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens for a two-day Hawaiian ʻAwa Workshop. ‘Awa (Piper methysticum) was historically and is currently, an important medicine and ceremonial beverage in Hawai‘i. It is a gift from Akua that opens communication channels between ʻāina, kānaka, and kūpuna. Today, it continues to be used as lā’au, in ceremony, and as a social connector. In this two-day workshop, cultural practitioner Kaʻiana Runnels of Moku o Keawe will lead the class in further exploring ‘awa by covering variety identification, planting methods, pest and disease control, and plant uses. Additionally, the class will also examine the current state of ‘awa in Hawai’i, coupled with how ‘awa might guide the lāhui in the future. Participants will dig up a two-year-old ‘awa at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and cut, clean, process, observe protocol, and sit in ceremony together as we share in the harvest.
