Hui No’eau, Beginning Lauhala Bracelet Workshop – Sunday, July 14, 2024
Begin your journey into the Hui’s upcoming Lauhala Workshop Series with Beginning Lauhala Bracelet – LEVEL 1. This course will begin with a brief introduction to Lauhala, covering the basic history of Lauhala weaving in Hawai’i, basic terminology and its cultural significance. Next, students will learn how Lauhala goes from a dried leaf to a weavable material and how it is collected and processed. Learning these stages of weaving is something teaching artist Koral Gill’s Kumu sees of huge importance, as almost a “right of passage”. For the remainder of the class, students will be making their bracelets. The goal for each student is to leave with a finished bracelet. The instructor will provide information on how to continue on and create more bracelets outside of the workshop and how/ where to purchase proper Lauhala tools to strip (cut) the leaves, and pullers to finish a project.

Imua Discovery Garden, Earth to Sky Exhibit – Tuesday, July 16, 2024
Imua Discovery Garden welcomes Steve Tobin’s Earth to Sky exhibit. It is the largest-scale exhibit to ever come to Hawaii! Imua Discovery Garden is meant to be a place of wonder and discovery for children and the young at heart. What better place to host a playful exhibit called Earth to Sky than a historic garden with 120-year-old Monkeypod Trees connecting us from the ground where we are rooted to the skies above? Much like Imua Discovery Garden, Steve Tobin’s works are meant to inspire the imagination and connect us back to nature.
